Because it is a socialist project at heart. Liberal projects, by definition, move power from politicians to the people. If that was the case with the EU, the salaries and nr of positions would decrease every year.
That would be for politicians to argue against themselves.
So by definition, career politicians, can only be in favour of more government, since that increases their power and wealth, and power is what all politicians, right or left, crave above anything else.
