Of course they are thinking about the social implications of their inventions. The problem is that the economic system is set up so that it's legally their job to make their companies' profit, not be regulated more. That's on us, and the governments we elect, to ensure that new technologies work for the collective good of people and not just for the wealthy few. We're not good at that.
