Okay so this might be a little unique. I speak both Afrikaans and Dutch. And my "native language" as far as I have one is a monstrosity of Afrikaans with English and Dutch mixed in irreverently (a grab bag of whatever the heck works). Currently getting the feedback that my Dutch is difficult to parse for people at times (not working at a very multicultural company right now).
The problem is twofold - my speaking rhythm for Dutch is too Afrikaans, combine that with a softer accent and it breaks brains. Additionally my ADHD and having three languages bouncing around in my head means I think in idea - connection - idea, and not... grammar. Also hate all the extra things. And I forget words. Aaaand I really dislike talking slowly. End result is, as one colleague put it, that I get in my own way, haha.
Does anyone have experience adjusting speaking pattern from a more multi-lingual environment?
I'm fairly sure this is overall a losing battle but it'd be nice to have a few things to flag for myself and clear up if I notice them.
Feel free to boost.
(Note that work is being cool and offering to find some training courses that might help, and I'm taking them up on that.)
