My logic with the 3D-printed paddle kit was to just get SOMETHING without spending a ton of money, make sure I want to do CW portable, and then invest in something better.
Honestly, that's been my approach with most stuff since getting back into ham radio... Minimize cost to try something, prove value (and need), then upgrade.
