Google translate will stifle the desire of people who speak different languages to understand each other. Language is so much more than conveying information. it’s actually a framework for how you process information and view the world around you. That’s why people from western cultures are having a hard time understanding Asian people. But not vice Vera. Thanks to globalization, or rather Americanization, Asians spend years learning English and get immersed in Western/American culture. Yet most European or American people don’t speak any Asian languages and know nothing about their Asian counterparts. I worked as a translator in China for years and I witnessed many occurrences where people misunderstood each other even with translation. I’m afraid with the proliferation of machine translation, the gap will only widen as nobody would bother to learn the language anymore. The only way to cross the cultural barrier is to know the people and talk to them in the same language.
