I disagree that insurance is a scam. At its core, you pay a premium in return for a potential benefit should the conditions be met.
The Insurance company calculates their risk and invests your premium, beting they will pay out fewer claims than the premium and investments generate.
No problem
However, medical insurance has been co-opted by many intermediaries. Since Obummercare only allowed them 15%, they drive UP the costs.
