My wife and I adopted our two children as infants through what is called an open adoption process. We and they know their biological families—we visit them and they visit us; we dine together; my children have ongoing contact with their half-siblings by phone and in-person as they have their entire lives. But our children have spent the vast majority of their time with me and my wife. Yet when I look at my children, I often see behaviors that resemble their biological parents more than me or my wife. Their personalities differ greatly, like those of biological siblings often differ, and there are good and bad societal consequences associated with those differences.
