My formative experiences watching the civil rights struggles unfold in the US South, as a white Southerner, have convinced me for my entire life of the opposite of what Last thinks:
The risks Last sees in civilizations changing too quickly, I see in civilizations moving too slowly, in refusing to change when change is morally imperative.
I saw my fellow white Southerners kicking, screaming, refusing to move to accept rights for people of color.
