proprietary software has such a huge lock-in effect, because:
- it costs money to buy,
- it costs time to learn, and
- even if you find an alternative that works for you, you can't just open your existing projects on that alternative. if you're lucky there's a way to import the old projects, but you'll still need to put in a lot of work fixing them up.

so all in all, it's no surprise that once a proprietary software is "good enough" it just sticks around forever . . . then gets worse over time
