I have learned that optifine is a piece of shit and tanks minecrafts performance on nvidia running on linux. The solution is to use a better performance mod and shader runner like sodium, which has a fork for forge in case you use forge as a mod loader.
The mc modding scene sure has changed since I've been away. Optifine used to be the first thing you downloaded
