I don’t think it matters if domain is already being used; as far as I know you can just add the .well-known/Nostr.json file and make sure your _config.yml is setup.
I have nip-05 on a few of my domains used for different things and I can rotate them whenever I feel like it. Kind of fun to have different ones going - helped me figure out the setup.
