I don't think we can discount it entirely. My father in law is Republican entirely for the tax breaks (annecdote of 1, but I don't get the sense that's uncommon).

Of course, once they've settled into their camp, it becomes less about the money and more about the unwillingness to admit they could be wrong. So I agree it's not all, or even mostly, about the money, but I wouldn't discount it entirely.
