Mark my words : The Democrat candidate will be Gavin Newsom, not Joe Biden. It makes sense, Gavin would not be able to win the primaries ( yet he represent all that Progressives hope for ) against the "moderate" Joe Biden; so it will be a slight of hand trick at the last moment, probably using a Democract "supermajority" to make the switch happen.
If anything it would be a similar situation to Nixon-McGovern or Reagan-Mondale except with much more brownskins and illegal aliens voting ( so Trump wining 49 states is impossible today ).
