This is because when I make two cuts, I get three pieces if I make two more perpendicular cuts each of those gets divided in three giving 3*3 or 3². So for my two dimensional tomato if I make as many sets of cuts as I can (two) n cuts always gives me (n+1)² pieces. How about a real three dimensional tomato? Well, it can fit three sets of cuts. If I make a set of cuts one way, I get n+1 pieces. Then I have a pile of flat disks , each of which gives me (n+1)² pieces. 5/x
