"It is well established that immunocompromised animals and humans are at high risk of severe viral infections, such as SARS-CoV-2 (9, 40, 42, 43), and thus, our finding that rag−/− mice lacking B and T cells are protected from viral-induced weight loss and exhibit reduced lung inflammation, while carrying the same or higher levels of virus, was a surprise. These findings suggest that adaptive immune cells play an important role in reducing SARS-CoV-2 levels, but that this benefit may come at the expense of increased inflammation and pathology."
