For our honeymoon my wife and I took Amtrak from Baltimore to New Orleans (28 hours) and we had such a lovely time. You do have to do some mental gymnastics to justify it but it's still so much more enjoyable than air travel.
I did want to point out, though, that it's actually illegal in the US for the freight carriers to take precedence on the rails over passenger trains. It's just a chronically under-enforced law that makes the carriers feel free to do whatever they want.
