IMO, these days, I'd argue that part of being a well rounded musician involves being able to create your own material.
Whether that be to create something wholly new, or to rearrange something else to suit both you, your instrument, and your abilities - to put your own spin on things, or to just breathe new life into a work.
IMO, this is especially important in this age of readily being able to stream pitch perfect recordings from "the best" - in the world, from anytime
