It's not a terrible exercise to ask yourself why you believe what you believe. Not because debates are worth a shit most of the time, but because you can learn a bit more about yourself and the world.
For instance I'm against immigration because I believe racial and ethnic differences have a corrosive effect on solidarity. I believe national solidarity (and therefore sovreignty) is important because people who are alike and share simialr values and see themselves tied to their land are more likely to be intrinsically motivated to be accountable stewards of their land and community. I believe that is good because God commands it and God is truth (among other things)
