Steam reviews for Concord are more positive than for Stormgate, both before and after Stormgate's F2P.
One positive review:
>The characters are ugly, yes, but the actual game play is crisp and fun. I don't ever watch the intro or the cut scenes. It's really cringe and what not. Besides that, the more I play, the more I understand the more fun.
Only overtly political reviewers seem willing to talk about why Concord flopped in any honest way. It's not Deadlock because you can't play Deadlock without an invite. It's not any gameplay deficiency at all because you would have to play the game to be turned off by the gameplay and nobody did.
The ugly characters are it. They're the reason. The robot with pronoun preferences is it. The marketing is it. Only a game's most superficial up-front presentation is what can cause so few people to even try it, to potentially find it wanting in any other way.
If this were just a normal run-of-the-mill unoriginal boring hero shooter like game reviewers want to say, then people just trying the game out to see that would lead to 100x the concurrent players. Even the price isn't a barrier to that with Steam's refund policy.
