The *only* role of chromosomal sex in sexual differentiation is (part of) gonadal differentiation (which is itself not just a simple binary switch).
Further phenotypic sex development is *entirely* independent of chromosomal sex. Yes, even genitals!
(before anyone shouts at me in the comments, let me point out that I did *not* say that phenotypic sex is *statistically uncorrelated* with chromosomal sex)
