Mastodon is definitely a dead end, for the reasons/vibe/lack-of-direction you cite. The interesting question, to me, is whether anyone builds more interesting community tools (and, very relatedly, communities) on top of AP, using inbound energy and content from other Fedi locations (very much including Threads) to help bootstrap.
