Sad news, funny story.
I found out today that a very old friend’s wife had Died Suddenly, blood clot, aged 45.
That’s depressing as hell, especially given they have a daughter in her late teens.
So instead, a story from their wedding day.
Agneszka was Czech, and for inscrutable reasons they got married on Christmas Eve. The reception was in a pub, and all her barely/non English-speaking family naturally (and to the confusion of most of the Brits) ordered fish and chips. Still, it was a jolly affair, and we all got on well with the aid of much sign language and alcohol.
Eventually, one of the Brits asked when Agneszka was going to throw the bouquet. After some confusion, she understood that the tradition was that the bouquet would be thrown, and the person who ended up with it would be the next woman to marry. I, I note in passing, was trying to signal/explain to her father why the Christmas Eve rail shut-down meant I was refusing more vodka as we needed to leave soon, and thus had no knowledge of this conversation.
Agneszka and her groom had an invite to my wedding, a few month hence. Agneszka had one of those densely-packed, wire-bound bouquets that were very common in the noughties.
Agneszka apparently had a secret past as a shot-putter, for she promptly turned and hurled the bloody thing straight at me, giving me a bruise that lasted for months and a story I still occasionally trot out twenty years later.
Goodbye, Agneszka. I wish I could have used your real name.
