I think it’s worth flipping the observation that japs are overly fond of HS on its head: why aren’t Americans more fond of their time in high school? It’s the time of your life that you are coming into adulthood, learning about yourself, what you like to do and who you like to spend your time with, when you can really form meaningful friendships and relationships with the opposite sex for the first time and really see what your body is capable of athletically and push yourself beyond the limits you thought you had. The answer is obvious, at least around these parts: america is a racial hell, and HS is a glorified daycare where the government tries to propagandize while wrangling, or failing to wrangle, the racial chaos, neglecting most prosocial and communitarian aspects all the while.
TLDR: Americans smugly note that the focus on HS in Japanese media reflects the fact that japs love HS and hate the rest of their lives while ignoring the fact that americans hating their entire lives equally doesn’t really reflect the exceptionalism that they think it does.
