Brazil's Supreme Court has released a video of the testimony of former Army Commander Marco Antônio Freire Gomes, which shows the moment when Minister Alexandre de Moraes scolded the general for presenting a different version to the Supreme Court about the statements he made to the Federal Police during the investigation into the 2022 coup plot. The recording was made available by the Supreme Court on Tuesday (3), a day after the court concluded the questioning of witnesses from the prosecution and defense. Moraes interrupted the testimony after the general was not assertive about the reaction of former Navy Commander Almir Garnier Santos, a defendant in the case, to the coup plans presented by Bolsonaro. The general said he was summoned by Bolsonaro to participate in a meeting at the Alvorada Palace on December 7, 2022. It was at this meeting that the former president presented the military leaders, for the first time, with a draft decree outlining the coup plan. According to Freire Gomes, the text presented a series of considerations as legal justification for the coup and suggested the use of the Armed Forces in measures such as GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order), state of defense, or state of siege after the election results. The goal was to intervene in the Electoral Court (TSE), then under Moraes' command, to annul the election results and prevent Lula (PT) from taking office. Freire Gomes said that the first version of the document did not surprise the military leaders. He said he met with Bolsonaro on other occasions at the end of 2022. In one of those meetings, the topic was revisited. Freire Gomes said it was at this meeting that he expressed his opposition to a possible democratic rupture. "As far as I remember, he only commented on the study [of the coup]. The brigadeiro Baptista Júnior [former head of the Air Force] said he wouldn't do anything, and I informed the president, in a very cordial manner, that any measures he wanted to take should consider various aspects: international and national support, Congress, and the legal framework."
