Manhood in the pre-industrialized world was characterized by what Anthony Rotundo called "communal manhood", which meant that a man ranks duty above personal ambition.

Of communal manhood in Colonial America, author Nancy Pearcey writes "the key word was duty: duty to one's superiors and to God. Manly virtue was defined as keeping one's 'passions' in submission to reason (with passion defined primarily as self-interest and personal ambition). The good man was he who exercised self-restraint and self-sacrifice for the sake of the common good."

In Plato's own time, the term "idiot" (idiōtēs) referred to a person who was concerned with his own private affairs or self-interest above the public good.

Therefore it is shameful for a man to be conquered by self because he becomes an idiot, unable or unwilling to master his own passions.
