I agree with you both, we also need to keep in mind, until the last decade, when Steve Jobs passed away, big innovation were driven by ego companies.
The mistake here, is there was any company to drive. Leader selection should have been a democratic event.
But past facts can't be deleted, ego energy of one person pulled the whole community for the sake of free software.
