Doctors of early modernity, all of them male, diagnosed hysteria, a condition in which the womb supposedly 'wandered in the body' causing all sorts of symptoms that were super-convenient to diagnose if you wanted to dismiss and diminish (and sometimes outright incarcerate) an independent-minded woman.
The accusation of hysteria was used to dismiss the symptoms of women describing abdominal pain of unknown cause, which is BITTER IRONY now that we know about 10% of women experience #endometriosis, where cells like the lining of the uterus literally grow out of place in the abdomen — the actually wandering womb.
