Meanwhile, on Thursday, the faculty union also came out against Shalhoub-Kevorkian's suspension. President Cohen and Rector Sheafer also sent another letter to the entirety of the faculty, announcing that they would convene a committee to consider new rules on academic freedom. One small phrase in the letter stuck out as dangerous to several faculty members: Public statements are only protected if they are "based in research". How this will or could be interpreted is speculation, but given that Shalhoub-Kevorkian was suspended on the grounds of 'incitement' for stating a political position which is held by many Palestinian and Israeli scholars alike, it does not bode well.
