Since folks are talking about public domain stuff today, we shouldn't forget CC0. You can waive your copyright in the US.
I'm not going to argue with anyone who is actively selling their creative works, but old stuff could be put into CC0. If that's too scary, then you could add a clause to your will to CC0 your works when you pass.
If you don't want to do any of that, then why complain that it took 100 years for racist Mickey Mouse to be public domain?
