That's an american culture thing too. It's hard figuring out what about your values come from your culture. To an american, being yourself is the top priority. To a Japanese, being Japanese is the top priority. The fact that it doesn't get a pass from you is cultural, and Japanese people care more about their culture than they do being sensitive to other cultures.
