Because images are resized before upload, the server does not have to use a lot of RAM and processing power to process them :)
This also means that uploading using a slow connection works much better. It's also nice if you have limited data allowance.
I used this tool to share photos of my travels with my family, using EDGE/3G/slow wifi in outback Australia.
