Sure, but the LLM can use a calculator as well. The point is to see that the LLM isn't regurgitating something that it's seen, because it hasn't seen every math problem. Realizing that they are instead following logic demonstrates that they are not stochastic parrots, and that they also can design experiments. Are they human? Of course not. But they can already do most things a human can do, if you give them the right context and ask them the right questions
