You nailed it. Part of the psychic pain is knowing, to some degree, the pain of loss of ability, and watching people risk theirs for minimal gain.
Like, if I've lost a child, and you're playing baby-throwing games because it's tun, why shouldn't I react with horror and apprehension? Why are you risking so much, for so little? Why would you ever believe pundits who say baby-tossing is safe, and that babies need to be shaken regularly to develop toughness for later in life?
