And of course, then there is the Romance Series, where you pick a new couple for every next book, preferable some of the already established cast - and readers will go for those.
I do see that with my Wolf books, which are almost stand-alones, but with a hook-in.
It's a very clever tactic. Romance authors are among the best with marketing. I try to learn from them.
