Early reports from Johns Hopkins said that 1 in 5 people who got the illness had heart damage. This was supposedly after the initial outbreak (China and Italy were mentioned).

Conversely, from PubMed:
"Three hundred and ninety genes were found to be upregulated and 115 genes were downregulated in post-vaccination cases compared with controls. Importantly, genes involved in neutrophil degranulation and cytokine signaling were upregulated. Our results suggest that immune dysregulation occurred following vaccination. Careful observation and care may be necessary if an abnormally high fever exceeding 40°C occurs after vaccination, even with antipyretic drugs."

The mechanism around SARS-CoV-2 are as one would expect, in either vaccinated or non vaccinated, which is why this type of virus was selected for gain of function research (because of it's potential to easily do harm). We are in a damned if you do, damned if you don't, sort of scenario: mitigating risk/harm is obviously the goal though, but I do not believe one answer supercedes all others. We also do not know the scope of the transfection from the synthetic mRNA, or modified mRNA, and long-term behavior of the intended protein expression (vaccine induced AIDS). This is the first time in our history this has been done, and controversy around lipid nanoparticles is still a thing.
