Many pundits have called Donald Trump a narcissist—it is a morally loaded word, not a compliment, and that might be true even when it is uttered by some psychiatrists or psychologists. Politicians, editorialists, and social media users have also called Trump evil, which is certainly a moral judgment. Such judgments overlook the reality that many personality traits and behaviors are at least partly determined by inheritance, by the interaction of gene-encoded proteins with the environment. Ignoring or rejecting the evidence for natural traits in people may explain why those with narcissistic traits are over-represented as leaders of businesses or government and in prison inmates. Their differential representation in these subgroups is partly an effect of how our society responds to their behaviors. To what extent is the thinking and behavior of my political opponents wired into their brains, or at least strongly influenced by biology, just like the behaviors of other animals like birds? And to the whatever extent it is innate, are denigration and punishment the best we can do in response to thinking and behaviors that annoy us?
