I always think of the Dead as being quite "loose", almost a jamming band (around core song structures) but ELP, Floyd, all those guys had quite organised musical structures?
I get the feeling with the Dead it was more like, "Ok, verse, chorus, verse, instrumental which might be 16 bars or it might be way longer, then back to the last verse"?
I can imagine there was a lot more listening to each other, than listening for the next planned change in the tune?
