Back of an envelope calculation. If a rail car can carry 100 tonnes. And a battery is 0.1 kWh/kg that's 1gwh for a rail car.

Molten salt would be more tricky. Flow batteries could also work.

When you think coal for power plants is moved by rail as is oil, it becomes less of a far out idea.

You're not going to beat the power loss if you did have a high voltage line but if the whole system is renewable you will be still likely making money.
