I went looking for any research related to a correlation between higher WIP and lower quality, and found this gem of a 2013 whitepaper originally published by Rally with findings based on
non-attributable data from 9,629 teams using Rally’s ALM platform.
https://www.hanssamios.com/dokuwiki/_media/impactagile_quantified_whitepaper.pdf There are other versions of it out there because it each of the subsequent owners of the company published a dumbed down (but prettier) version. I read them all. The original version I linked above is by far the best.
