MAN-YI, a strong typhoon, struck Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines in terms of population, causing floods, landslides, and high waves, according to the National Weather Service, in the sixth major storm to hit the country in a month. MAN-YI was classified as a strong typhoon when it struck the land for the second time in Luzon with winds reaching a maximum speed of 185 km/h, before gradually weakening as it passed over the mountainous island. More than 1.2 million people were forced to evacuate their homes as the powerful typhoon, which may have "catastrophic and deadly" consequences, approached, according to the weather service. Julius Fabianes, a medic in the city of Baliuag, said he saw roof tiles flying off houses and trees being uprooted. Around 2,000 people are sheltering in emergency centers set up in the town of Debut in Aurora province. Others remained in their homes either to protect their belongings or to question the warnings, according to Jeffrey Barotcha, a spokesperson for the disaster agency in Debut town in Aurora province. The state of calamity alert has been raised to its highest level in most areas of the eastern coast of Luzon, where MAN-YI struck for the second time, and extended to the western coast of the island, as the typhoon heads west. Weather experts warned of waves over 3 meters high that could hit the coast and cause flooding, especially in the capital Manila. The typhoon struck the eastern province of Catanduanes on Saturday evening. Roberto Monterola, the operations manager in the province, said there were no reported casualties as people heeded evacuation orders, while rescue and damage assessment operations are ongoing in the island. MAN-YI is the sixth major storm to hit the Philippines in less than a month. The previous storms have resulted in at least 163 deaths, displacement of thousands of people, and destruction of crops and livestock.
