I remember going through like 100 CD-Rs a month back then, and then we also had to use very specific CD-R burners (Plextor for the win) and the specific CD-R mattered too. The good ones came from China and smelled like peaches. That's how you knew they were legit.
Those always worked flawlessly. The PS2 CD-R laser had no issues with them.
When Toshiba hit the market with their 2x DVD-R / DVD-RW burner I jumped on it immediately. I think I paid like $450 for that thing, just so I could have more fun trying to pirate games.
