Universities are starting to experiment more with certificate programs, which are a step in the right direction. It is kind of silly that it's currently framed as an all-or-nothing thing: degree or not.

That said, I think degrees do have value. If designed right, they can ensure students receive a briad perspective while also specializing in different areas and are forced to take the challenging classes that will make that specialization worth while.
