Yeah, thats the old horse... in the times of the US founding fathers, "democracy" was understood as "direct democracy" , ie. The ancient Greek model, whereas the USA was founded upon the Roman Republican idea, ie. multicameral representative democracy.
Ideas change with time however and "democracy" today encompasses more or less all modes of governance that allows commoners to have a say in the governing process.
