i became very aware of the complex structure of the dirt by living here in #madeira... you can see on the cliffs the layers of large, basaltic and other igneous rocks, and then sandwidched under them, sedimentary rocks interspersed with smaller igneous rock pieces here and there... it's not hard for me to see if you push enough water over it, a lot of things fall down and rearrange...

you don't even have to project your imagination into the future, i have seen it with my own eyes the steep slops smoothing down and the debris falling about wherever is below, and this is just rain, imagine a tsunami that covers even half (900m 2700 feet) once again that which is solid, or stable, will stand but many other things will be washed down into the valleys and this is where most of the people live currently...

and because i can see the layers in the steep slopes, i know that it has probably happened dozens if not hundreds of times to this place since it first poked above the sea level

so it's a good mental exercise, i think, especially if the models about the likely impending realignment of the crust to a new ambient magnetic field, and the unimaginable amount of seismic and volcanic activity that will kick off on top of all the things being washed away and buried in mud, soon to be a new layer cake of sedimentary rocks interspersed with rubble that fell down as the mud was settling out
