I've had clinicians "talk" outside my room thinking I couldn't hear them. But I have excellent hearing, and I've been called all sorts of horrid things. A few times I got called an "it" ( they/them is listed as my pronouns in my chart), and when the talk was particularly nasty, that's when I got the worst care, left without blankets, and never got pain meds despite being at a 9 or 10. I guess I wasn't human enough for them to care.
