During a solar eclipse, the moon appears nearly black to observers on Earth because it's positioned directly between the Earth and sun. However, its edges capture and reflect sunlight due to the sun's expansive radiant spread. Moreover, the Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight, illuminating the moon's surface faintly. Light reflected from Earth's vast oceans also contributes to the indirect illumination of the moon, albeit minimally.
