I was six at the time. Most of my memories about Watergate/Nixon's Pardon come from how I was taught to think about the event or the cultural references in tv & movies afterward.
In my rural, small town school, the ideas of "political expediency" and "for the good of the country" were driven home, much like we were taught that Reagan was the "great American savior" as well as the "great communicator." 🙄🤨😡 It wasn't until college that I was exposed to anything otherwise.
