American journalist Gershkovich arbitrarily detained by Russia, UN group says
==========
American journalist Evan Gershkovich has been arbitrarily detained by Russia for over a year on false espionage charges, according to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Gershkovich, a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, has been jailed since March 2023 and is currently on trial in Yekaterinburg. The trial is widely believed to be a sham. The U.S. State Department and Gershkovich's employer have declared his detention wrongful. Another American journalist, Alsu Kurmasheva, is also currently jailed in Russia on charges of failing to self-register as a 'foreign agent' and spreading false information about the Russian military. The State Department is considering declaring Kurmasheva wrongfully detained. The U.N. working group also determined that Guatemalan journalist Jose Ruben Zamora is arbitrarily detained by his country's government.
