The story of railway investment goes a bit like this:
The Govt. provides a subsidy to keep services going;
which both sustains train operators profits (still paying dividends) & allows them to lease rolling stock;
who's owner Porterbrook also remains profitable & pays, this year £80mn of dividend mostly to non-UK investors;
So there we have it, (y)our high fares are helping keep everyone happy... oh, except you that is, stuck in a filthy late train....
