This is really helpful getting me thinking, Graham. I'm starting to deduce that the jump-to-pointer-vs-firehose thing is an important difference. But:

* The firehose is just another pointer - it's just `firehose_pointer = planet_earth.now()`.
* Pointers should be represented in the client per column. Each column should have different pointers, with different behaviour.
* Probably important to have a mechanism for synchronising pointers in different columns, so you can see what the situation was in different columns at the same point in their timelines.
* Must be possible to treat pointers as bookmarks. I knew already this was what I wanted, but seems increasingly vital.
